Hout Bay Family Home

One of our latest lighting projects was for a magnificent family home located in Hout Bay, Cape Town. The owners were very involved in the lighting design and wanted the lighting to be a feature all on its own, bringing us on board at the design stage of the project.

Located high up on a mountainous nature reserve in an eco-estate, the house overlooks the iconic Sentinal in Hout Bay. It is made up of three barn-style double volume pavilions showcasing massive sliding doors and impressive clerestory windows surrounding each pavilion. The quantity of glass allows one to view the beautiful mountain and sea vista’s from anywhere in the house, with the exposed wooden beam ceilings giving the house extra depth and volume, allowing us to play around with various lighting ideas.

It was decided to use contemporary LED down lighters in all bedrooms and bathrooms on dimmer switches so that the mood and ambience could be controlled. But when it came to the lighting design for the main pavilion we chose a slightly different route. Rather than placing standard down lighters in this space, the client opted for LED strips placed above the clerestory windows running along each length of the pavilion. The actual strips are invisible to the eye when looking up but they cast a striking glow onto the exposed beam ceiling giving the space an ethereal glow. Paired with strategically placed table and floor lamps adds to the mood of the space.

Due to the dramatic nature of the main pavilion, it was decided to place three pendants above the dining room table using 5m custom-made cables. The elegant and sophisticated Cognac glass pendant from Brightstar was the perfect choice, paired with 1920's-style elongated vintage filament LED lamps to enhance the drama. For the kitchen, overhead under-counter lighting was used for task lighting, and a sophisticated white Fabric Drum fitting from Radiant was the obvious choice above the island, finishing off the lighting in the kitchen beautifully.

Throughout the house, Matrix plug plates in charcoal were used, complementing the black steel beams making up each pavilion. The Powerdock is a well-used powerpoint in the kitchen, a stylish but concealed power outlet system containing both 3-pin and 2-pin connections as well as USB points for charging phones and laptops. It neatly retracts into the mounted surface when not in use and when required, the unit pulls up and automatically locks into position.

Action Soccer Lighting overhaul

Plumstead Lighting recently overhauled the lighting at the two action soccer pitches at the  Montague Gardens arena.

The existing lighting consisted of 400 watt flood lights which equated to 4,8 Kilowatts per pitch. This resulted in 9,6Kw energy/lighting consumption for the two pitches.

The brief: a good lighting system with energy saving and long life fittings. The result: Lights were upgraded using induction lowbays and LED Highbays

For Pitch 1: 200w induction lamps in a lowbay lighting unit were installed. (Total wattage 2,4 kilowatts)

For Pitch 2: 140 watt LED highbays were installed. (Total wattage 1,4 kilowatts)

This resulted in a total saving of 5,8 Kilowatt with extremely low maintenance, long life and 5year unlimited warranty on induction lamp and gear.
