Get serious with your fairy light decorating this festive season 05/11/2015

There is nothing better than driving through your neighborhood at night admiring the twinkling lights that illuminate gardens and homes, ringing in the festive season. Whatever your religion or beliefs, the end of year in South Africa is a time of celebration – of the end of the year, of the warmer weather, and of the much anticipated annual summer holidays.

Rather than simply adding a few fairy lights around your trees and patio columns, why not take your fairy light decorating up a notch this year? Here are some great ideas:

Create a Christmas card or photo wall
What a great way to display cards and photos! String a chain of lights across your mantle piece or on a blank wall. Buy some of those tiny pegs at a stationery store and use them to clip on cards or photos so that they come alive at night!

Make your own DIY Christmas tree
Tired of store bought trees or prefer not to get pine needles everywhere? Then make your own DIY fairy light tree. All you need is a blank wall, some cello tape or prestick and a bit of imagination when it comes to the decorations.

Decorate your Christmas table
Make your festive table even more festive by laying a string or strings of lights across the middle of the table between settings. For a great affect, lay a thin gauzy fabric in your colour scheme over the lights so that they glow through the fabric. Dim the lights and let your table steal the show.

Light up your garden
The garden is the most obvious location for fairy lights but this year, try and do things a bit differently. Use rope lights attached to spiral wire and create Christmas trees around the garden. They can be as big or as small as you like. Accentuate paths and flower beds by placing rope lights around the outlines of your flowerbeds or pathways. Guests will be able to find their way with ease. Or why not wind them up your garden umbrella and keep your umbrella open when the sun goes down for a gorgeous effect.

Decorate your home
With so many options for decorating your home with fairy lights, the mind boggles. Here are our best ones: If you have a mirror, sculpture or artwork above the fireplace or mantle, add a border of fairy lights. If you have a staircase and banister go wild in decorating as much or as little of this area as you like. Or why not add your message of joy and love around the house on any spare walls. Rope lights are the best option for this.

Whatever you choose to do with your fairy lights this year, have fun illuminating your space.

At Plumstead and Okavango lighting and electrical, we have a range of fairy lights to choose from – select from rope lights, curtain lights (best for patios and awnings outside), light chains, and icicle lights. We also sell the relevant accessories and timers for these fairy lights.
